Internet 2 konzorcijum je najavio da je obnovljenja (update) infrastruktura spremna da se stavi u pogon i obezbedi inicijalni kapacitet od 100Gb/s za istraživače i edukatore. Mreža je prvi put demonstrirana kada je organizacija uspostavila vezu između Univerziteta Nebraska – Lincoln i Fermilab-a i Batavia-ji u Američkoj državi ilinojis. Ovom vezom je bilo moguće preneti trećinu terabajta za 5 minuta preko 10Gb/s konekcije. internet 2.0 je objekat konfuzije sa internet infrastrukturom sledeće generacije za javnost. Nažalost, internet 2.0 je ograničen na trenutno 207 povezanih univerziteta koji koriste mrežu visoke brzine kao infrastrukturu za brzu razmenu podataka i testiranje novih tehnologija.
