This is a simple, in-depth FAQ for Baseball Mogul 2007, one of my favorite
baseball games. If you have played Baseball Mogul, then no doubt you know more
of the emphasis of the game is on being a general manager, an owner, or a
commissioner, than being just a player.
Much like in real baseball, the general managers and commissioner are
responsible for drawing fans, making fans happy, and staying under budget.
There is no salary cap in baseball, so your budget is whatever you can afford.
Thus, teams in larger markets like New York have bigger budgets and more fans
than a team in a not-as-big market such as Milwaukee. So, Baseball Mogul grants
you the ability to experiment with an endless number of markets. You can choose
from a list of premade cities and regions, or make your own. If you're a
general manager, you can use cash to build a stadium in a new city and move
there. Or, if you want to use commissioner controls, you can move teams between
different markets instantaneously. If you want to make a brand new expansion
team, it's also good to know what markets there are.

The problem is that there is a difference between a city and a market region.
A market region can encompass many different cities. So even if two different
teams are based in two different cities, they will still be competing over the
same fan base if they are in the same region. Teams in the same region get
fewer fans at their games than they would get if they had the monopoly on a
region. A good example of this is the San Francisco Giants and the Oakland
Athletics. They are based in different cities, but they both draw from the fan
base of the Bay Area.
So, I have taken it upon myself to sort these regions out. It's easier to place
teams when you know what cities belong to what regions, which the game doesn't
tell you. It's also hard to compare regions in the game side-by-side, since
you can only look up cities, not regions. It's also annoying to find all the
viable regions when you have to click through a hundred cities to find some of
them.
In this guide, you will find every pre-programmed market region in the game
listed in order from largest fanbase to smallest fanbase. Per capita income
also affects how good a market is, but not nearly as much as population does.
So, that is why they are listed by population. I hope my quick reference guide
is of some service.

Region Population:
Here is where I list the total population of the region. Larger population
makes the game easier for the team. Smaller population makes it harder. I
find that to have a competitive team, you need at least 1,000,000 people in
the region, but probably even more than that.
Region Increase Per Year:
This number represents how the population of the region changes from year
to year. For most regions, this number goes up every year. For a few
markets (like Buffalo), this number goes down, which means the population
is shrinking. The rate of increase cannot change unless you use commish
controls to alter the market region.
Region Income Per Capita:
This number is how much money the average person in a region makes per
year. The more money they make, the more likely they are to go to a
baseball game, and the more likely they are to buy concessions once they
get to a baseball game. Just like population, the higher this number is,
the easier it is. The lower this number is, the harder it is. Anything over
$20,000 is usually fine. Most of the very large markets have per capita
over $20,000, except for Canada and Puerto Rico.

choices. There are markets from every corner of America, more than anyone will
ever need. However, if you are considering adding a new market, here are some
places that aren't right in the midst of pre-programmed market that are still
untapped. In reality, most of these places don't have enough population to
make a proper market, but they're worth mentioning anyway.
- Everywhere outside the United States except for those few Canadian cities
listed and Puerto Rico
- All of Louisiana except for New Orleans (Baton Rouge, Shreveport, Lafayette,
and so on).
- All of Mississippi
- All of Nevada except for Las Vegas
- All of Alaska outside of Anchorage
- All of Wyoming
- Western Kansas, Western Nebraska, Western South Dakota, Western North
Dakota, and Eastern Montana (all of which is connected)
- Tallahassee, FL
- The "scarf" of Michigan
- Western Montana (Helena, Butte, etc)
- Key West, FL
- All of Maine and the Northern parts of New Hampshire, Vermont, and New York.
- Roswell, NM
I think I'm most surprised that Mississippi doesn't have a single city in the
database, so that's just something to think about. Roswell isn't really a
market, but it's a cool place anyway.

Q: Does the city population affect anything?
A: City population has zero effect on gameplay. Only region population matters.

Q: Does choosing a different city within a region have an effect on gameplay?
A: Yes, but not much. The altitude affects how the park plays, although
typically, cities within the same region don't vary too much on altitude. Also,
teams geographically close (latitude and longitude) may effect each other's
fan bases.

Q: Why is my budget smaller/larger than another team in a similarly-sized
region?
A: There's more to money than just a large potential fan base. Many factors are
in place to the budget. First, how your region is doing economically. Poorer
people aren't going to go to the baseball game every weekend. Also, ticket
prices. If they're too low, you might not be getting all you can squeeze out of

depending on the success of the team over time, and depending on how you treat
the fans) is different from another team, you're sure to have a different
budget. Don't forget about TV contracts, too. That affects revenue and

Q: Is there a reason to put a team in a smaller market?
A: For fun. For challenge. If you abuse the power the game gives you, you can
make things incredibly easy, so why take the easiest path possible? The game
is here to be customized to your comfortable level of challenge.
Plus, you don't just have to use the regions on your own team. If you're
feeling evil and are tired of the Yanks and Red Sox, you can move them to
Abilene or something.
