Za razliku od modernih FPS ostvarenja, koja teže realističnosti, Warsow se vraća korenima FPS žanra, i najviše podseća na klasike kao što su Quake 3 i Unreal Tournament. Novina u ovom segmentu igre je uvođenje dva tipa municije – po default-u koristićete slabu, dok ćete jaču morati pokupiti posebno. Za uzvrat, jača municija, pored toga što nanosi više štete protivniku, često omogućava i lakše nišanjenje. Pored oružja i municije, imaćete mogućnosti da skupljate i neizbežne powerup-ove, kao i health i armor.
U ovakvim igrama, dizajn mapa je od presudne važnosti – mape moraju biti izbalansirane i oružja dobro raspoređena da se igrači ne bi uvek skupljali na istom mestu; uz sve to, one moraju biti i zabavne. Srećom, Warsow uspeva to da izvede u većini mapa koje isporučuje sa igrom. Većina mapa poseduje više nivoa, da bi se nagradili igrači koji vladaju veštinom kretanja (često se do najviših delova stiže samo uz komplikovane kombinacije poteza, a upravo ti delovi su oni koji pružaju najveće prednosti). Uz sve to, na svaki tip može se primeniti i popularni instagib mutator (CTF se samo tako i igra).
Postoji još jedan vid igre, Race, koji se bitno razlikuje od ostalih. Naime, Race izbacuje element borbe (mada oružja ostaju!), te ostaje samo "umetnost" kretanja – igrači se trkaju do cilja, koristeći pritom svaki trik koji znaju ne bi li dobili neki deo sekunde prednosti. Pored strafe jump-a, koji je praktično neophodan, mnoge mape daju igračima mogućnost da koriste i lanser raketa, u cilju izvođenja rocket jump-a, koji će drastično povećati brzinu kretanja. Iako Race zna da frustrira, pošto je često teško uopšte i završiti mapu, a kamoli biti brz, verujem da će se svako oduševiti kad bude video šta sve dobri igrači uspevaju da izvedu.
U igrama ovog tipa, online zajednica je od presudnog značaja za uspeh – džabe igra, ma kako dobra bila, ako nemate s kim i gde da je igrate. Warsow se i ovde solidno snalazi – u svakom trenutku otvoreno je par desetina servera u Evropi (plus još nekoliko u Americi, neigrivih zbog pinga), na kojima su manje-više ravnopravno zastupljeni svi tipovi igre; naravno, broj igrača drastično je veći uveče, mada ćete i preko dana uspeti da odigrate poneku partiju. Takođe, nema osipanja zajednice usled pojave novih verzija, što je česta boljka ovakvih igara, tako da ćete lako naći iskusne igrače od kojih možete učiti.
Manje je više
Grafika je prilično jednostavna – urađena je u cartoon stilu (cel-shaded renderovanje), a sve u cilju poboljšanja preglednosti koja je neophodna za ozbiljne takmičarske igre. I pored toga, ona ipak izgleda simpatično, i nije nikakav problem navići se. Naravno, tu je i druga strana medalje – igra će bez problema raditi i na slabijim konfiguracijama. Zvuk, kao i grafika, podređen je takmičarskoj prirodi igre – uglavnom jasan i jednostavan, on svakako služi svojoj svrsi. U pozadini čućete brži tehno, koji je tu da bi podigao adrenalin i ubrzao igru – ipak, repertoar je mali i verovatno će vam brzo dosaditi.
Warsow je definitivno dosledan svojim ciljevima – ono što je bitno za takmičenja, pre svega gameplay jako baziran na igračevoj veštini, urađeno je odlično, dok je ostatak igre bačen u drugi plan. I pored pohvala na skoro svaki element gameplay-a, ovde se krije i najveća mana igre – jednostavno, igra će se svideti samo onima koji vole ovakav stil igre; ostale će svakako odbiti rudimentarna grafika, a možda i (strma) kriva učenja. Ipak, ako ste fan, nema razloga ne probati Warsow – ako ništa drugo, onda zato što je besplatan.
